By Plane to PortugalThe best way to get to Coimbra is to fly through Lisboa or Porto and then to catch a train.
The international airports are Airport of Porto (about 120 km north of Coimbra) and Airport of Lisbon (about 200 km south of Coimbra). Both airports have regular scheduled flights to and from all main European destinations as well as major world cities .
By Train to CoimbraThere are two train stations in Coimbra, Coimbra-B (also known by 'Estação Velha'), the main train station, and Coimbra, in the center of Coimbra, the two are connected by shuttle trains.
From LisbonThere are comfortable trains arriving hourly from the Lisboa-Oriente station (you can arrive there from the airport by metro, bus or taxi) to Coimbra-B. The journey takes about 2 hours .
Step 1Go to the "Gare do Oriente" railway station. There are two recommended ways to get there from the airport: a) take the subway red line and leave at "Lisboa Oriente" station . Check schedules at www.metrolisboa.pt.
b) take a taxi (10 min., around 10 euros).
Step 2At "Gare do Oriente" train tickets are sold on the 1st floor and train-lines are on the 2nd floor. Trains depart approximately every hour (from 6am to 10pm) and the journey takes around two hours. You can buy tickets and check schedules online at www.cp.pt.
Step 3Get off the train at "Coimbra B”. Either take a taxi directly to your Hotel (it should cost less than 10 €) or take a local train to "Coimbra A” (downtown station), using your previous ticket (this transfer is included in the price) and then take a taxi.
From Oporto There are comfortable trains arriving hourly from Porto-Campanhã station (you can get there from the airport by bus, taxi or metro - use the direct violet metro line from the Airport of Porto) to Coimbra-B. The journey takes about 1 hour.
Step 1
Go from the airport to the "Campanha" railway station. To get there take the metro line E. Tickets are available at the metro station, buy a z4 ticket (4 zones ). It should take about 40 minutes to reach "Campanha" station. Check the metro schedules at www.metrodoporto.pt.
Step 2
At "Campanha" station, tickets are sold on the main entrance and trains to Coimbra usually depart from line 8. Trains depart hourly (from 6am to 10pm) with a journey time of about one hour and fifteen minutes for Alfa Pendular and Intercidades trains. You can buy tickets and check schedules online at www.cp.pt.
Step 3
Get off the train at "Coimbra B”. Either take a taxi directly to your Hotel (it should cost less than 10 €) or take a local train to "Coimbra A” (downtown station), using your previous ticket (this transfer is included in the price).
