Technical Visit to Douro Valley

The technical trip includes visit & lunch at Quinta do Seixo, in Douro valley, and a visit to Caves Ferreira (Porto wine cellars) in Porto.

Quinta do Seixo (vineyard estate)

DOURO is the oldest Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) vinyard region in the wine growing history of the world. Currently more than 250 years old, it is located in the north-east of Portugal’s mainland along the river Douro valley.This region is bordered by mountain ranges in the north, west, and south and by the Spanish in the east. Douro vinyard region was declared a World Heritage Site in 2001.

On the south bank of the river Douro, in Cima-Corgo sub-region, lies Quinta do Seixo, which provides a breathtaking stunning view over the River Douro.

Caves Ferreira (Ferreira Cellars)

Established in 1751 by a family of winemakers from the Douro, Ferreira possesses a rich tradition and a prominent role in the history of Porto wine.
Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, a legendary lady with a unique personality, contributed significantly to the consolidation of the brand. She became indeed a myth and a symbol of strength, facing the adversities of the nineteenth century Douro. Ferreira Cellars invites you to discover a brand older than 250 years, a symbol of top quality that encapsulates Portugal's heart and soul.

Programme:

09h00 – Departure from Coimbra to Quinta do Seixo, in Douro Valley (circa 2h30).

11h30 – Arrival at Quinta do Seixo

- Welcoming session at the Chapel Terrace;

- Presentation by a guest speaker of the origin of the Douro Demarcated Region;

- Guided tour to the winery, the wine cellar and robotic lagars (automatic wine presses);

- Tasting of two Porto Wines (selected vintages) in a room with a spectacular panoramic view of Douro;

- Short walk to the picnic area, through the vineyards, where the plantation methods, grape varieties and other viticulture details will be explained.

12h30 – Picnic in the Vineyards – buffet service

Menu:

- Soup,

- Salads,

- Chicken and mushroom quiche/vegetables/codfish,

- Traditional cheese and grilled smoked sausages from the Douro,

- Cod Pataniscas (cod fried steaks),

- "Alheira” cakes with sesame seeds,

- Seasonal fruits,

- Sponge cake or Almond Pie.

Wines:

- Mateus Rosé, Casa Ferreirinha Planalto White Wine, Casa Ferreirinha Esteva Red Wine, Sandeman Founders Reserve (Porto Wine).

14h30 - Departure from Quinta do Seixo to Porto (circa 2h)

16h30 - Visit to Caves Ferreira (Porto wine cellars), with tasting of two Porto Wines

19h00 - Return to Coimbra (circa 1h15)
